By: Heather Sica
August 1st, 2009, Waterford, CT - Thirteen trucks traveled to the Waterford Speedbowl for the 5th NEATV Truck Feature Event. After two rounds of practice, the trucks lined up for their first 8-lap qualifying heat race. After an intense battle with the #17 of Mike Anzalone, it was the #0 of Hur ricane Payne that took the checkered flag, and started the feature on the pole. According to NEATV Truck rules, the #84 of Allen Coates was to start from the rear of the field and try and work his way to the front.
The feature began with outside introductions of the NEATV Truck Division. A heartfelt dedication was made by the #25 of Dan Butler to his 6 month old son, who is currently at the Children's Hospital in Boston, receiving more medical treatment after 4 open heart surgeries. Once the field was set, it was time to go. The #0 of Payne took off on the drop of the green, taking the #83 of Gee Perry with him into 2nd. However, on lap 3, the yellow flag flew as the #17 of Mike Anzalone got loose in turn 2, spun and collected the #22 of Keith Chapman. On the restart, the #84 of Allen Coates was already up to the 5th position. The #0 of Payne got another great start and was able to pull away from the #83 of Perry. The #0 of Payne kept his distance from the #83, but Coates was hungry to go undefeated. On lap 7, the #84 was in 2nd place going after the lead. The #0 of Payne and the #84 of Coates battled, following in the same line, with Coates looking high and low to get passed the #0 of Payne. Lap 18, the #0 of Payne slipped up, leaving a slight opening down low and Coates quickly filled the space. Payne and Coates battled side by side down the front stretch, but it was Coates who took the top spot. Payne was not giving up easily. Lap 21, Payne was to the outside of Coates. Coates thought he was clear and contact was made between the two trucks. The #0 of Payne backed out to let the #84 straighten himself out, and they continued to battle for the last 4 laps. The Bad Luck Continues
By: Heather Sica
July 25th, 2009, Waterford, CT - The bad luck continued this Saturday in the Late Model division for Howard Payne and the #16 Late Model. Late night thunderstorms that passed through Waterford on Friday left a great deal of water in the center of the infield at the Speedbowl. The track's safety team worked hard to clear it out to make the track safer for it's competitors, however, it delayed the action that qualifying was cancelled. The #16 of Payne was to start the race in 14th position. After two rounds of practice, it was time for features. As the first feature went on the track, Crew Chief, Doug Leonard noticed a fuel leak on the #16, and the crew quickly went to work to change the carburetor. Unfortunately, the change did not solve the problem and the #16 of Payne had to park the car after only 15 laps of competition, finishing the race where he started, in 14th position.

Coates Captures the Checkered, Again
By: Heather Sica
June 10, 2009 Waterford, CT - The threat of rain did not stop the New England ATV Truck Series from competing in the Levine Automotive Sponsored, 20-Lap Feature Event. The 3rd event of the new NEATV Truck Series brought out 10 trucks, 2 new to our series. "It is great to be racing the trucks again," said Bill Leonard, owner of the #8 and #50 trucks. "It's a division that is fun to run and affordable for any competitor."
To determine the feature line up, each driver drew a number at the front gate. As the last winner of an NEATV Truck event, the #84 of Allen Coates had to begin the feature event from the rear of the field. With the luck of the draw, the #22 of Keith Chapman started the feature on the pole with the #25 of Dan Butler to his outside. The #50, driven by Louie Bellisle started 3rd with the #0 of 'Hurricane" Payne to the outside. The start of the race meant trouble for the #85 of Greg Butler, Jr. A major mechanical failure lead to flames coming out of the #85 Chevy, sending him to the pits for the rest of the event. When the green flag flew, the #22 of Keith Chapman jumped out front with the #0 of Payne following in line behind him. Coates was not settling in the back. By lap 3, the #84 of Coates surpassed his teammate, the #94 of Scott Gregory, for 5th place. On lap 7, Coates battled the #8 of Bill Leonard for 3rd. While the #0 of Payne battled, looking high and low to get by the #22 of Chapman for the lead, the #84 of Coates looked to the inside and put a fender down low to make the pass for 2nd on lap 10. Coates followed Chapman, but hungry for the lead, he looked high and low, and finally made a move to the outside on lap 12 passing Chapman for the lead. While Coates took off with the lead, the top 5 was not settling. Payne looked high and low to try and follow Coates passed the #22, but could not complete the pass. Contact between turns 3 and 4 got both the #22 of Chapman and the #0 of Payne loose, but they were able to hang on to it. With both the 2nd and 3rd place trucks loose, the #8 of Bill Leonard looked to take advantage, hungry for a win, but was unable to make the pass. Coates took the checkered flag on lap 20 after a caution-free feature event. After a great race, Coates was smiling, making it his 67th victory at the Waterford Speedbowl. "We just need more [trucks] out here. They're real affordable and a whole lot of fun," said Coates from victory lane. Coates was followed by the #22of Chapman in 2nd, #0 of Payne, #8 of Leonard, #94 of Gregory, #17 of Mike Anzalone, #50 of Bellisle, #25 of Dan Butler, #13 of Jon Zoller, and the #85 of Greg Butler, Jr. (DNF - Mechanical Failure) rounding out the field.
With the NEATV Truck Series, there are also many contingency packages for every Feature Event. The #22 of Keith Chapman was awarded the $25.00 Lightening Lights Gift Certifricate. Winner Allen Coates received the Spectro Oil Contingency package. There were also cash bonuses awarded to the 3rd, 5th, and 7th place finishers, by a random drawing that was made by Coates at the completion of the race. The 3rd Place finisher, Howard Payne was awarded the $50.00 cash bonus, while 5th place finisher Scott Gregory was awarded the $30.00 cash bonus, and the 7th place finisher, Louie Bellisle, in a car owned by Bill Leonard received the $20.00 cash bonus. Fittingly, the 800-hp stock cars will make a return to Thunderbolt Raceway in 2009. 2008 race winner Justin Allgaier was crowned the series champion and has since signed with legendary Penske Racing to contest the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series, leaving plenty of hungry young hot shoes and series veterans behind to claim this season’s title.
